Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Development journalism emphasizes reporting that fosters societal progress by highlighting developmental issues and encouraging public participation. In Yauri LGA, Kebbi State, development journalism has played a role in informing citizens about governance processes, policy implementation, and opportunities for civic engagement. By focusing on issues such as infrastructure development, education, and healthcare, journalists provide a platform for dialogue between the government and citizens (Garba & Musa, 2023). However, limited resources, lack of training, and political interference often hinder the effectiveness of development journalism in the region. This study examines how development journalism can enhance public participation in governance, fostering accountability and inclusive decision-making.
